Known as the capital of the Inca Empire, the contemporary Cusco, a city located at 3,300 MASL (10,500 feet), is a sample of diverse cultures: Pre-Inca, Colonial, and Republican. Nevertheless, Cusco was more than a capital. It was an administrative, military, and religious city, similar to the Mecca. At the present, it is the most ancient inhabited city in the American continent.
Currently, the Korikancha, the most sacred Inca construction in Cusco, forms part of the church of Santo Domingo. Ruins, temples, churches, and mansions come together in a memorable destination, full of history and culture. A city with a splendid legacy, its streets guide to visitants through its rich and beautiful past.
In the valley of the Urubamba River, from a distance of 120 km (75 miles) from Cusco, Machu Picchu elevates at 2,400 MASL (7,900 feet) between Huayna Picchu (young mountain) and Machu Picchu (old mountain). It extends in a spectacular system of flourishing vegetation provided by the close jungle and sheer landscape.
From the peak of the Huayna Picchu located in front of the Machu Picchu is a prodigious panoramic view of impressive ruins and the Urubamba valley. The impressive views of this citadel over the top of the mountain and its well-preserved ruins are the dream of photographers.
