The Main Square is flanked by the Palace of Government, the Municipality and the Cathedral. The Torre Tagle Palace, a beautiful mansion built in 1735, houses the offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the present day. Very close, the recently renovated Osambela Palace, built between 1803 and 1805, is used as center of artistic exhibitions and cultural events.
The numerous colonial churches of Lima are jewels of the Latin American architecture. Examples are San Francisco, founded in 1535, and La Merced, whose first construction date is earlier than that of the foundation of Lima. Modern Lima is a mix of architectural styles and beautiful gardens, especially in Miraflores and San Isidro, commercial districts with excellent stores, art galleries, and restaurants. Barranco is residence of many artists and writers of Lima, and is full of bars and night clubs.
